i used to like taking the train everywhere, but train fares just keep rising, and the service doesn't seem to have improved at all in the 8 years or so that i've been in and out of this country. prices are increasing even more this january! yay, privatized public transportation! i mean, wait, boo.

Nice...I thoguth it used to be pretty cheap by train? Makes me wonder if we will ever see passenger rail in the US again, if a rail-happy place like England can't make it affordable.
the uk has the most expensive train tickets in the world--i think even higher than japan? it's close. it's all privately owned, so the gov't (likes to say it) has little to do with the cost. but it is making more and more people drive everywhere -- which in the end is the gov't's problem.
